The Kola district (see map) of the Murmansk region was established on August 1, 1927. Its original name was Kolsko-Loparskiy district.
District’s borders
The Kola district got its modern name on July 1, 1936 after some of its area was transferred to other administrative entities of the region.
The district’s capital Kola was first mentioned in the historic chronicles as early as 1565. On its 400th anniversary in 1965 Kola was granted a status of a town.
The Kola district is located in northwestern part of the Murmansk region. Its territory is 27,600 square kilometers (19 percent of region’s territory) stretching from the Barents sea in the north to the Finland’s border in the south-west.
Administration
The executive body of the Kola District is the Kola District Administration. The Administration is run by the Head of Administration under the principle of one-man management. The head of administration is appointed on a competitive basis by the district’s elected body, the District Deputies’ Council.
Head of Administration Mr. Chekrygin Mikhail was appointed on May, 2009.
District Council
The District Deputies Council is the representative and legislative body of the municipality elected every five years.
The chairperson of the District Council is the Head of the Kola District. The current Head of the Kola district is Mrs.Valentina Kustenkova who was elected on December 11, 2005 for a five-year term.
Municipalities
The Kola District comprises a total of 41 settlements in 11 municipalities. 6 of the municipalities are urban and 5 are rural.
